Double Baked is half bakery, half smoke shop on Shipyard in Wilmington

Given that “baked” and “baking” is a big component of sweet shops, it makes sense that many bakery names can be a double entendre for smoking enthusiasts, intentional or not. But one new business in Wilmington is making the most of the connection.

Double Baked Smoke Shop & Bakery has been open about a month at 511 Shipyard Blvd. Sisters Sally Blakley and Cassie Bonikowske started the business where one half of the store is focused on items like water pipes, stickers, incense, local art and other 420-friendly items.

The other half is a bakery.

“My sister is a really good baker,” Blakeley said. “And we also wanted to create a smaller, locally focused shop for smoking enthusiasts.”

As far as the baked goods, cookies and meringues are a specialty. But Bonikowske has also been baking up small lunch box cakes.

“They serve about one-to-three people and are super cute,” Blakely said.

Two of the favorite cookie varieties are the brown-butter chocolate chip and Nan’s cookies, which are a hard-to-describe family recipe with nuts and coconut.

Bonikowske also said the Dutch Cocoa cookies, which started as a seasonal special, are now on the regular menu. Also look for scones and cookie dough truffles. A Greek friend supplies Double Baked with authentic baklava.

Bonikowske takes special pride in the meringues, which come in small and large bags. She makes them perfectly light and crisp

“We just really want to be your friendly neighborhood smoke shop bakery,” Blakley said.

The shop is open 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Call 910-399-2595 for more information.
