• The Salvation Army-Shawnee is now taking applications for those registering eligible children for the Angel Tree program.

Applications are online only. Call (405) 275-2243 to get an invitation code. Angel information needed to register includes the following documentation, which must be uploaded online: photo ID for all adults in the house; birth certificates for children 12 and under; proof of all income for the household; and proof of all household expenses. To be eligible, applicants must live in Pottawatomie, Lincoln, Seminole, Hughes or Okfuskee County. Children must be between the ages of 6 months to 12 years old in 12/26/22.

• Sept. 26 to Oct. 2 is National Diaper Need Awareness Week. Legacy Parenting Center, at 126 S. Center, is raising awareness and seeking donations and volunteers to help the center distribute needed items. To donate or learn more about Legacy Parenting, visit legacyshawnee. com. • From 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center, 1700 W.

Independence, Monkey Business is having its semi-annual sales event featuring everything that relates to infants, children, teens, and expecting moms.

• Starting at 5 p.m. is Bricktober Fest at Bricktown Brewery, 4845 N. Kickapoo.

• At 8 a.m. begins the Shawnee Horse Sale at the Heart of Oklahoma Exposition Center.

• From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 7109 N. Kickapoo, is the Shawnee Trading Post and Flea Market. It’s a family-friendly outdoor marketplace that hosts a wide variety of vendors from all over the state who sell new and used high quality merchandise.

Open the first and third Saturdays from March 19 – Oct. 15. Admission is free to the public.

• From 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Hope Church at 37801 W. 45th St. in Shawnee, is a Block Party featuring volleyball, corn hole, a bounce house, petting zoo and food.

• From 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the corner of Federal and Harrison, BancFirst will host its annual Frenzy on Federal event, which will feature live music, food trucks, pop-up vendors, a 5K run, lots of kids’ activities, and a car show.

• Shawnee City Commission meets at 6 p.m. at City Hall Chambers, at the corner of Broadway and 9th Street.

• Community Renewal Block Leaders are hosting Neighborhood Night Out, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. There are 13 block parties across the community, each having its own spin, from bounce houses to yard games to a desert swap. Those interested in hosting a block parting or getting connected to a nearby party can email grace@communityrenewal.org.

• Fundamentals of Drawing begins at 5 p.m. until 6:30 p.m. at the Community Art Gallery at Shawnee Mall, 4901 N. Kickapoo. Cost is $8 a week per person. Sessions occur each Wednesday through Oct. 12. Call (405) 432-7676 for more information.

Oct. 6-8 (Thursday through Saturday)

• Friends of the Library is anticipating its upcoming fall book sale Oct. 6-8. On the first day, the Members-Only sale will be from 5-7 p.m.

(on the 6th). Memberships are also available at the door. The sale then opens to the public from 7-8:30 p.m. that same evening. On Oct. 7, hours will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. And on Oct. 8, the sale will be open from 9 a.m. to noon. Also a giveaway to teachers will be from noon to 1:30 p.m. on the 8th. Paper bags are 50 cents each, and hardbacks are $1. Books also will be sold for $5 per bag with the bags provided.

• Spinning Spools Quilt Guild’s monthly meeting is at 7 p.m. at the Senior Center at 401 N.

Bell, just north of 10th and Bell. All persons who might be interested in learning the art of piecing quilts or quilting quilts are welcomed. For more information, call guild president Marilyn Johnson at (405) 517-7129.

• Free Movie Night at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 39307 W. MacArthur, Shawnee. Join us Friday, October 7th at 7:00 pm for a fun night of fellowship, movie, popcorn and pop; all free! Watch your choice of movies: “YOUNG PIONEERS”, newlyweds David and Molly are off to start their life together as homesteaders in the Dakota Territory. They proudly stake their claim and get to work. Or you can enjoy the family movie, “Everyone’s HERO”, ten-year-old baseball fanatic, Yankee Irving, is always the last one picked for sandlot baseball games. But when Babe Ruth’s prized baseball bat is stolen during the 1932 World Series, Yankee steps up to the plate to help retrieve it for his beloved idol.

Oct. 17 (Monday) Shawnee City Commission meets at 6 p.m. at City Hall Chambers, at the corner of Broadway and 9th Street.

Oct. 19 (Wednesday) From 9 a.m. to noon at the Community Center,

at 804 S. Park, there is a Health Fair event.

Oct. 20 (Thursday) Paul Austen and Rilla Askew will be featured at the Third Thursday Poetry Reading at 7 p.m. at the Lunch Box on Main Street. Austen will read from his collection, Notes on Hard Times (2019), and more recent poetry. He may also read from his book of essays on acting, Spontaneous Behavior. A prize-winning novelist for her book on the Tulsa Race Massacre, Fire in Beulah, Askew will probably read from her most recent novel, Prize for the Fire, about a Protestant woman martyred during the reign of Henry VIII. Open mike will follow their presentations. The Lunch Box will open at 6 p.m. for those who want to order a meal before the readings.

Oct. 21 (Friday) The Arts @317 will host its own Block pARTy from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. This will be its annual Christmas show with several of its artists attending. There will be Christmas ornaments, decorations and gift ideas. The featured musical guest under the awning will be Kevin Hall.

Oct. 22 (Saturday) From 5 p.m. to 10:30 p.m., St. John Lutheran Church, at 3610 N.Union, will host its Octoberfest event, with a traditional German meal, silent auction and live auction. Tickets are limited; call (405) 273-1539 to order. Tickets must be paid for before the event. Proceeds go to the building care fund.

Oct. 29 (Saturday) From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Shawnee American Legion Post 16, at 522 W. Saratoga, is hosting a Trunk or Treat event. All are welcome to attend.

From 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Brown Derby, 1830 N. Kickapoo, in Shawnee, residents are invited to Cruise the Poo October, a Trunk or Treat event where attendees can view classic cars and collect candy.

Nov. 4 (Friday) St. John Lutheran Church, at 3610 N. Union, is hosting Friday Fest, with a Traditional Turkey Dinner. Dinners will be eat-in and to-go.
