Holocaust education speaker at ‘Boomers and Beyond’

James Paharik, professor of sociology and director of Seton Hill University’s National Catholic Center for Holocaust Education will present “The Holocaust and Catholic Social Teaching” at the next “Boomers and Beyond” speaker session in Murrysville on Sept. 13.

Paharik teaches courses on the Holocaust and genocide in the modern world. His current research focus is on the rise of disinformation in media.

The presentation will be at noon at Mother of Sorrows social hall, 4202 Old William Penn Highway in Murrysville. Doors open at 11:30 a.m., and participants can bring a bag lunch. Beverages will be provided.

Symphony East to hold Dixieland picnic

Symphony East will host a Dixieland box-lunch picnic from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 19 in Murrysville.

The 1 p.m. performance will feature the Ralph Guzzi Dixieland Band, and will be at St. Alban’s Anglican Church picnic pavilion, 4920 Cline Hollow Road in Murrysville.

The cost is $30 per person and includes a picnic lunch at 11:30 a.m. Reservations are required by Sept. 12 — no tickets will be sold the day of the event. For reservations, see SymphonyEast.org or call 724-327-4864.

The Westmoreland Conservancy will host the following fall adult programs:

• Sept. 10: Salamander search at the King/Potter reserves, 9 a.m. at the reserve lot on Crowfoot Road in Murrysville.

• Sept. 22: Autumnal equinox walk, 6:30 p.m. at the Morosini universal pedestrian trail, Morosini Farm Court in Murrysville.

• Sept. 28: Monthly meeting, 7 p.m. at the Delmont Public Library, 75 School Street.

• Oct. 8: Witch hazel hike, 10 a.m. at the reserve on Hunter Drive in Murrysville.

Fall programs at Murrysville library

The Murrysville Community Library will host the following fall adult programs:

• Sept. 7: First-time homebuyer seminar, noon

• Sept. 12: Build your balance house, 2 p.m. with Samantha Shields of Alliance Physical Therapy, discussing how to know if you are at risk for falls and how to decrease that risk as you age. This program will be virtual.

• Sept. 12-13: “Charting Your Future,” 6:30 p.m. with Sam Abraham and Vanda Raszewski hosting a two-part series on helping seniors learn to navigate financial, health care, legal and estate issues.

• Sept. 19: “Railroads in Civil War Strategy,” 6 p.m. with host and Civil War reenactor Kenneth Serfass portraying general and former president Ulysses S. Grant.

• Oct. 1: CASA informational meeting, 10 a.m. with a presentation on the state’s court-appointed special advocate program. Participants can learn how to help children in need through volunteering.

• Oct. 18: Dementia awareness, 6:30 p.m. with host Doreen Putnam, author of “Sometimes Grandma Doesn’t Know Me!” who will help participants learn more about dementia and its early warning signs.

Rummage sale at Union Presbyterian

Union Presbyterian Church will host a fall rummage sale Sept. 9-10 at the church, 656 Route 380 in Washington Township.

The sale will run from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 9 and 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 10. Items other than jewelry, furniture and antiques will not be priced, and will be available for a donation of the customer’s choice.

There will be food available for purchase.

Fall storytime at Murrysville library

The Murrysville Community Library will host its annual fall storytime sessions for babies, toddlers and pre-schoolers over six weeks beginning Sept. 13.

“Babies-n-Books,” for children age 12-24 months, will be at 10 a.m. Tuesdays from Sept. 13 to Oct 18. Sessions are 30 minutes.

“Toddler Time,” for children ages 2-3, will be Wednesdays at 10 a.m. from Sept. 14 to Oct. 19. Sessions are 45 minutes.

“Pre-School Storytime,” for children ages 3-6, will be Fridays at 10 a.m. from Sept. 16 to Oct. 21. Sessions are 45 minutes.

All programs are free, but registration is required by visiting MurrysvilleLibrary.org.

• Franklin Regional school board combined committee-of-the-whole/voting meeting, 7:30 p.m. Sept. 19 at the Murrysville municipal building. Meetings are broadcast live on Comcast local access Channel 19 and livestreamed at Murrysville.com.
